The award will be presented during ACP’s annual Convocation ceremony on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. This event is part of ACP’s annual meeting, *Internal Medicine 2014*, which runs through April 12.
Dr. Kerpen, a resident of Oyster Bay, NY, is an internal medicine physician and nephrologist who serves as the Lorber Professor of Medical Education at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
The Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award was established by the ACP Board of Regents in 1997. It recognizes Fellows of the College who have consistently volunteered their time to teach medical students and residents. Recipients demonstrate exceptional teaching skills, show exemplary care and concern for patients at the bedside, and serve as role models and mentors.
Dr. Kerpen is a Fellow of ACP (FACP), an honor that acknowledges professional achievements, scholarly contributions, and superior competence in internal medicine.
In addition to his role as Lorber Professor of Medical Education at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, Dr. Kerpen has held several leadership positions. He served as Section Head of Nephrology at Queens Hospital Center in NY and Director of Medicine for the Manhasset Division at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC). He is also the founding Chair of both the Committee for Innovations in Medical Education and the Bette & Jerome Lorber Center for the Advancement of Medical Education at LIJMC. The Lorber Center focuses on developing innovative methods to enhance medical education across undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels for internists.

He has edited, moderated, and/or delivered 108 recorded or online grand rounds lectures, including three mini-symposia. His dedication to teaching has earned him six LIJMC Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year Awards, as well as their Special Award for Contributions to the Residency Training Program in 2001 and Lifetime Teaching Award in 2007.
